Rescued cats turn on the charm

LUCKY is aptly named, indeed. Rescued in Taman Melawati, Kuala Lumpur, by a young boy, the feline found a home in a condominium in Taman OUG, Old Klang Road.  

After a while, though, it found itself on the streets again, until a new owner picked it up.  

But it was not long before he, too, gave it up to another person, who did not keep the cat for long, either, and the feline found itself homeless once more.  

Then, cat lover Freddy Fatey found him.  

“I first saw him by the drains near the condo and took him in about eight months ago,” said Fatey, who has three pedigree cats, including a Maine Coon named Toby.  Since then, the feline's luck has changed tremendously for the better and, on Sunday, Lucky participated in the Kuala Lumpur International Cat Show 2007, which was held at the Titiwangsa Indoor Stadium.  

The friendly and playful feline was placed ninth in the first round, but it did not make the cut in the second round.  

Toby, meanwhile, was placed second in the first round and then emerged first in the second round in the Premiership category.  

Lucky was not the only rescued cat that participated in the household pet category.  

There was also Momo.  

Rescued by Sya Kamaruddin of Damansara Jaya, the charming moggie was initially put up for adoption.  

“We never meant to keep him but he quickly endeared himself to the family and took to our three cats.  

“He is now a very special 'member' of our family,” said Sya.  

Momo was placed fifth in the first round and third in the second round.  

The two-round show was organized by the Feline Society of Malaysia and licensed by the Cat Fancier's Association (CFA). It was sponsored by Royal Canin Malaysia and supported by City Hall in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2007.  

There were more than 100 cats at the show and the breeds included Persian, Ragdoll, Abyssinian, Ameri-can Shorthair, Siamese, American Curl, Oriental and Exotic.  

In addition, there were about 100 exhibitors from Thailand, China, the Philippines and Brunei.  

Internationally acclaimed judges Sheila Mizzi from the United States and Cheryle U’ren from Australia judged the show.  

The four main categories in the show were Championship, Premier-ship, Kitten and Household Pet.  

The Championship category was for cats that were not neutered, while Premiership was for neutered cats.  

Felines between four and eight months old came under the Kitten category, while the Household Pet was for non-pedigree felines.
